Program Description:
Upon completion of this course, a successful student will have acquired
the skills and knowledge necessary to enter the profession of Dental
Assisting at an entry-level position either front office administrative
duties and/or back office clinical assistant. This course may also prepare
graduates for entry-level employment in the dental field in related
occupational areas such as wholesale or retail dental industry companies
in sale, clerical, assistants, etc. Students will be capable of performing
the following duties: Techniques in proper infection control,
sterilization, taking of vital signs, preparing instruments and
operatories for various procedures, place and remove rubber dam, place and
remove matrix, prepare cements and restorative materials, assist the
dentist chair side with passing instruments and suction, take and pour up
impressions for prosthodontics, expose, develop, and mount radiographs,
place and remove separators and arch wires, place and remove periodontal
dressings, prepare and remove sutures and post-operative dressings,
prepare endodontic materials, coronal polish, and identify anatomical
structures of the face and skull. Course components include:

Course Descriptions
Module 1 – History of Dentistry
Law and Ethics, History of Dentistry, Anotomy and Physiology, Histology,
Embryology, Landmarks of the face. Tooth Morphology, Sterilization
Technique and Clinical Labs.
Module 2 – Infection Control
Periodontal Disease, Microbiology, Oral Pathology Nutrition, Infection
Control OSHA Rules and Regulations, Disinfection Techniques PPE, Chemical
and Waste, MSDS Training, Vital Sign, Patient Homecare and Clinical Labs.
Module 3 – Diagnosis & Treatment
Medical Emergency, Emergency Procedures, Pain control preparing syringe
for injection, Dental Instruments, Vital Signs, Proper Charting in a
Dental Office. Dental care, working with Disabled patients and Clinical
Lab.
Module 4 – Preventative & Restorative
Bite-wing and Bisecting Technique, Dental bonding and Etching, Liner
applications. How to take proper Dental X-ray. The foundation of Dental
Radiography, Intraoral Radiography, Lab Procedures and the Matrix System.
Clinical Lab.
Module 5 - Specialties
Endodontrices, Periodontics, Prosthodontics, Orthodontrics Implants, Oral
Surgery, placing spacer, archwires post-operative dressing placement and
removal relining impression, Shade Glides, removing plaque and stains and
Clinical Labs.
Module 6 – Office Skills
Communication on the Dental Office, verval and non verbal, HIPAA
Compliance, appointment setting, patient records and files. Financial
management, A/P, inventory, office machines, terminology, eligibility,
benefits. Procedural and Diagnostic Codes, Denti Cal preparing resumes and
interviews.
Module 7 – Dental Emergencies
CPR, First Aid, Burns, Snake Bites Prevention and TX positions, Drug
Classifications, Assisting with C02, Dental Emergency Patient Disease and
Possible Hazards.
Module 8 – Externship
Externship provides school-coordinated work experience in a medical or
dental setting. Students gain practice with administrative and clinical
duties and receive employer feedback.
